Nature Conservation and Flood Control in the Yangtze River Basin

The context in which the project has been formulated is a need to mitigate flood events through rehabilitation and conservation of ecosystem functions, while simultaneously enhancing conservation and sustainable use of biological resources of global importance and strengthening sequestration of greenhouse gases.

The objectives are:

  • (i) to develop methodologies to promote sustainable use of natural resources in areas critical to global environment conservation and flood control, and
  • (ii) to develop methodologies to promote rehabilitation and conservation of ecosystem functions in degraded protected areas where the globally significant environment is at stake.

The project will strengthen capacity of the central and local government bodies to enable them to apply developed methodologies to the region as a whole in a flexible and sustainable manner.
