The “Regional Ocean Governance (ROG)” was one of four topical strands discussed during the 2023 Marine Regions Forum (MRF) conference in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region (7 – 9 November 2023 in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) under the title of “Navigating ocean sustainability in the Western Indian Ocean”.

Within this topical strand, GEF  IW:LEARN co-chaired the session on “Sharing the Regional Ocean Governance process in the WIO and beyond”, together with Nairobi Convention Secretariat and Cartagena Convention Secretariat. The session that took the form of a ROG dialogue, focused on the participatory process of developing a Regional Ocean Governance Strategy (ROGS) for the Western Indian Ocean and featured GEF International Water (IW) projects and their contribution to the regional ocean governance process. As part of the session, GEF IW:LEARN gave a keynote on the role of large marine ecosystems (LMEs) in advancing regional ocean governance and building partnerships and the importance of LMEs in fostering strategic collaborations and strengthening governance from the regional to the local level.
