Over 40 countries gathered in Budapest to drive development of transboundary water cooperation agreements and other arrangements

The Water Convention secretariat (UNECE), under the leadership of the Governments of Hungary and Germany and with the support of several partners, held a global workshop in Budapest on 7-8 November to support the development of transboundary water cooperation agreements and other arrangements.

Highlighting that 60% of global freshwater flow occurs in shared basins, with 40% of the global population residing in such areas, the workshop aimed to tackle historical challenges in the development and management of transboundary water resources. Notably, Konstantina Toli, Project Coordinator of IWLEARN, moderated the Special Session on the evolution of Transboundary Agreements and other arrangements. The workshop facilitated insights from over 90 participants, drawing on the experiences of countries that successfully navigated negotiations, fostering the development of sustainable and effective transboundary water agreements. The event emphasized the necessity of trust-building, political momentum, and long-term perspectives in legal frameworks. Subsequent basin and bilateral meetings further strengthened regional collaboration
