18 Jul 2019 - experience-notes - project: 4966 - English Integration of Groundwater Management into River Basin Organizations in Southern Africa [Experience Note]
SADC-GMI signed Memoranda of Understanding with River Basin Organizations in the SADC region to foster collaboration in ensuring that groundwater issues were included on the Work Plans of the RBO Commissions. SADC-GMI implemented research project on the Shire Transboundary River/Aquifer system shared by Malawi and Mozambique in order to investigate and subsequently promote the concept of ‘Conjunctive Water Resources Management’. SADC-GMI delivered trainings to build skills and raise awaren...
24 Apr 2019 - experience-notes - project: 2600 - English [MedPartnership] An Integrative Methodological Framework (IMF) for coastal, river basin and aquifer management [Experience Note]
In recent decades various management approaches have been developed for the terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments in the Mediterranean basin. These include Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), and more recently Coastal Aquifer and Groundwater Management. The focus of these approaches has been most acute in coastal areas and in the management of the key resource – water – with the potential for overlap and duplication of resources. ...
24 Apr 2019 - experience-notes - project: 2600 - English [MedPartnership] Identification of the effects of human pressure on groundwater quality to support water management strategies in coastal regions: a multi-tracer hydrogeochemical approach in the region of Nador (Morocco)
Groundwater pollution from anthropogenic sources is a serious concern affecting several coastal aquifers in the Mediterranean Basin. In this region adequate science-based management strategies to protect groundwater from contamination and overexploitation are of paramount importance. In particular special attention has to be paid to coastal aquifers in arid and semi-arid regions, often representing the main freshwater resource to sustain human needs, as in the case of the Bou-Areg Aquifer (Na...
18 Apr 2019 - experience-notes - project: 2600 - English [MedPartnership] Aquifer vulnerability mapping: Evaluating simultaneously an aquifer’s vulnerability to land-based pollutants and saltwater intrusion [Experience Note]
This study was conducted on the coastal aquifer of Ghar El Melhbin Tunisia where the aquifer’s vulnerability was evaluated by applying a new, experimental method called ACVM (Aquifer Comprehensive Vulnerability Mapping). This method establishes a single parameter called “comprehensive vulnerability” that describes simultaneously an aquifer’s "vertical vulnerability” linked to contamination threats from land-based pollution, and its "horizontal vulnerability” related salt water intrusion.
18 Apr 2019 - experience-notes - project: 2600 - English [MedPartnership] Management and protection of Mediterranean groundwater-related coastal wetlands and their services [Experience Note]
Coastal wetlands display a wide range of natural typologies such as springs, seepage areas, dune slacks, coastal lagoons, marshlands, abandoned stream courses, deltaic lagoons and ponds, etc., which are mostly the result of the geological processes originating the wetland. They are one of the most productive worldwide ecosystems and provide to humans a wide range of services. Besides, groundwater related coastal wetlands in arid and semiarid areas such as the Mediterranean produce and provide...
18 Apr 2019 - experience-notes - project: 2600 - English [MedPartnership] Vulnerability mapping: Karst aquifers in Croatia [Experience Note]
Karst aquifers are an important source of groundwater worldwide. They are particularly vulnerable to pollution and there is a need to increase knowledge and raise awareness about the link between landbased activities and the quality of groundwater in these aquifers. In many cases, discharges from karst aquifers introduce significant volumes of freshwater to the marine environment. Two case studies were undertaken in Croatia to assess and map the vulnerability of karst aquifers in coastal area...
01 Mar 2024 - experience-notes - project: 10374 - English Enhancing transboundary water cooperation through multistakeholder regional dialogues
Regional multistakeholder dialogues (MSDs) are an effective way to advance transboundary water cooperation. This experience note aims to capture experiences and key lessons from regional dialogues that have been supported through GEF IW:LEARN. It highlights how successful regional MSD in Southeast Europe was replicated in Central America, fostering cooperation and partnerships. Key enabling factors to foster such regional MSDs are introduced, and key resource materials are highlighted to repl...
15 Jan 2024 - experience-notes - project: 10375 - English Blue Nature Alliance Big Ocean Experience Note
Advancing the capacity of managers across 16 countries who are responsible for 32 large marine protected areas, the Alliance partnered with Big Ocean to increase collaboration between practitioners and ocean funders, contribute to enhanced knowledge management, development and sharing of new tools and lessons. The budding field of large-scale ocean management requires intentional collaboration between researchers, managers, and practitioners to build and design a knowledge base for how to pro...
