Twinning Exchange - SCS-SAP and PROCARIBE+

The proposed twinning initiative brings together three Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters projects—the Gulf of Mexico Large Marine Ecosystem (GoM-LME), the
South China Sea Strategic Action Programme (SCS SAP) and PROCARIBE+ (Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf LMEs) to foster peer-to-peer learning, strengthen regional cooperation, and accelerate the adoption of best practices in transboundary water and marine management. This exchange will enable cross-regional transfer of methodologies, innovations, and governance approaches, enhancing collective resilience and sustainability.

This twinning initiative brings together three Global Environment Facility (GEF) International Waters projects, the Gulf of Mexico Large Marine Ecosystem (GoM-LME SAP), the South China Sea Strategic Action Programme (SCS SAP), and PROCARIBE+ (Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf LMEs) to foster peer-to-peer learning, strengthen regional cooperation, and accelerate the adoption of best practices in transboundary water and marine management.

These projects are facing similar threats and there is common vision among the participating countries on targets and actions for reversing environmental degradation trends. Furthermore, the projects share similar characteristics in terms of ecosystem diversity and governance challenges, meaning that methodologies, experiences, and opportunities could be shared between projects with a similar impact. Therefore this exchange will enable cross-regional transfer of methodologies, innovations, and governance approaches, enhancing collective resilience and sustainability.

The primary goal of the collaboration between the SCS-SAP, GoM SAP, and PROCARIBE+ projects is to establish a cross-regional community of practice. By leveraging the specific strengths of each initiative, ranging from ecosystem restoration, community education, and circular economy to marine spatial planning, the collective aims to enhance governance, optimize knowledge management, and ensure the long-term sustainability of marine conservation efforts by exchanging experiences.

General Objective for the first twinning in Mexico

Share with colleagues from SCS and PROCARIBE projects case studies and success stories from GoM-LME SAP project activities involving key local partners and communities, showcasing good practices related to governance, organization, and management. Serve as a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas to address common challenges associated with sustainability strategies for the project, with the involvement of strategic partners.
