Workshop

Regional Capacity-Building Workshop to Advance the Integrated State of Convention Area Report (SOCAR) on Marine Pollution, Marine Habitats, and Sargassum

The Integrated SOCAR Subgroup Meeting and Capacity-Building Workshop forms part of the process to develop the Integrated State of Convention Area Report (SOCAR) for the Wider Caribbean Region.

The workshop has been designed to strengthen regional capacity for integrated assessments and to support Working Group recommendations on the purpose, scope, conceptual framework, methodological approach, environmental and ecological objectives, indicator framework, data requirements and reporting structure of the Integrated SOCAR.

The workshop will seek to develop a shared understanding of the conceptual framework, methodological approach, indicators, objectives, data requirements, and reporting structure for the Integrated State of Convention Area Report (SOCAR), while strengthening regional collaboration and advancing a scientifically robust, policy-relevant, and integrated assessment framework for the Wider Caribbean Region.

Workshop Objectives

  • Define the scope, outline, and objectives of the Integrated SOCAR.
  • Agree on a shared methodological framework (DPSIR, ecosystem-based approaches, AMEP–SPAW integration).
  • Identify data sources, key partners, and existing gaps.
  • Establish thematic subgroups on data, habitat health, Sargassum, and cross-cutting indicators.
  • Strengthen SIDS technical capacity in data interpretation, monitoring methodologies, use of CEP tools, and aligning SOCAR outputs with national policy processes.

Main Outcomes

  • Agreed methodological and conceptual framework for the Integrated SOCAR.
  • Strengthened SIDS capacity for monitoring, data management, and integrated assessment.
  • Identified data partnerships (e.g., remote sensing, water quality, habitat monitoring).
  • A roadmap and timeline for SOCAR development (2026–2027).
  • Enhanced alignment with SOMEE and the Sargassum Regional Action Plan.
