Launch of the MPA Finance Toolkit

05 Aug 2024 | by m-duque@unesco.org
Blue Nature Alliance and partners share a new resource on financing options for marine protected areas.

The Blue Nature Alliance is excited to announce the launch of an MPA Finance Toolkit, developed in collaboration with the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association, Reef Resilience Network, and The Nature Conservancy. The toolkit presents a comprehensive resource designed to provide marine protected area managers and practitioners with a wealth of resources to enhance the financial stability of their MPAs, including information on essential financing strategies and tools.

The toolkit, which was developed for and piloted by marine managers in the WIO region, reflects the real-world challenges and solutions identified during the Western Indian Ocean MPA Finance Workshop hosted in September 2023. Within the toolkit, interested practitioners can find videos showcasing examples of sustainable financing strategies in practice, an extensive glossary of finance mechanism, and a methodology for identifying and prioritizing MPA financing opportunities.

The full toolkit can be accessed here: MPA Finance Toolkit

About the project

The Blue Nature Alliance, a global partnership to catalyze the conservation of 18 million square kilometers of ocean area, collaborates with governments, NGOs, Indigenous peoples, local communities, and scientists worldwide to catalyze the creation, expansion, and improvement of ocean conservation areas. To date, the project is proud to support the work of more than 60 partners in 38 global engagements who are collectively working toward conserving more than 18 million square kilometers of ocean. From Colombia to Ireland, to Tristan de Cunha in the Atlantic, to Africa’s Western Indian Ocean region, these marine champions are working to sustainably, equitably, and effectively manage the ocean for the benefit of people and nature.
