In Memoriam: Hugh Walton - A Legend within the GEF International Waters Community
Hugh passed away peacefully overnight after a prolonged illness. Despite his health challenges, Hugh remained committed to his work until his final days, recently contributing as a consultant to the CSEPTA (Climate Science to Ensure Pacific Tuna Access) project. His dedication and remarkable resilience will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Hugh was a significant figure within the Fisheries, Agriculture and Marine Ecosystems division of the South Pacific Community as well as the Ocean Fisheries Programme, and Fisheries Ecosystem Monitoring and Analysis communities, leaving a lasting impact through his passion for the sustainable management of oceanic fisheries. His contributions to the UNDP GEF Oceanic Fisheries Management Projects were instrumental in shaping tuna fisheries in the South Pacific into one of the world’s only truly sustainable fisheries. His work on tuna fisheries management has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands in the Pacific. Hugh’s influence on leadership, expertise, and collaborative spirit will continue to be felt for years.
Many of us in the LME and IW communities remember Hugh fondly for his kindness, wisdom, and commitment to environmental sustainability. The 2021 article "A chapter ends in a long, adventurous book on a life in fisheries for Hugh Walton" beautifully chronicled Hugh's professional journey and aptly captured the essence of his contributions and adventurous spirit.
Hugh Walton will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on through his work, the communities he served, and the countless lives he touched. Let us take a moment to reflect on his contributions and ensure that his legacy is formally recognized within the LME and IW communities so that his remarkable achievements may continue to inspire future generations.
Rest in peace, Hugh.
