Global Conference

IW:LEARN at World Water Week 2025

In August, IW:LEARN joined global water leaders at World Water Week 2025 in Stockholm to co-lead five strategic sessions tackling some of the most pressing challenges in transboundary water cooperation.

These sessions explored critical themes such as groundwater for climate adaptation, water diplomacy, source-to-sea approaches, the benefits of cooperation across borders, and the future of shared ecosystems in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through collaboration with key partners, IW:LEARN will bring forward practical solutions, cutting-edge tools, and shared knowledge to strengthen water security and resilience in a rapidly changing world.

1. Groundwater: The Invisible Lifeline for Climate Adaptation
25 August | 09:00–10:30 | Room C4
Session ID: 12063
Groundwater is a vital yet underutilized climate adaptation resource. This session spotlights global innovations and success stories in groundwater use, from glacier-fed aquifers to nature-based solutions, emphasizing its role in tackling water scarcity, salinity, and pollution in a changing climate.

Convenors: GEF/IW:LEARN, IGWRA Centre, IWMI, UNESCO-IHP

2. Water Diplomacy to Address Climate Vulnerability
25 August | 09:00–10:30 | Room C2
Session ID: 12255
This session presents diplomacy tools and best practices used by states to manage droughts and low flows in shared basins. It focuses on preventing conflict and fostering sustainable development in climate-vulnerable regions.

Convenors: GIZ, GEF, Govt. of the Netherlands, IHE Delft, ICPDR, IUCN, IWMI, UNCCD

3. Measuring the Benefits of Transboundary Water Cooperation
26 August | 09:00–10:30 | Room 27
Session ID: 12079
How can we better communicate the benefits of transboundary water cooperation? This session explores real basin examples and strategies for identifying, measuring, and presenting cooperation outcomes to key decision-makers and the public.

Convenors: GIZ, GEF/IW:LEARN, OSU, MRC, NBI, World Bank, others

4. Source-to-Sea Dialogue: Coherent Action Along the Water Continuum
27 August | 11:00–12:30 | Room C3
Session ID: 12242
This session highlights how a source-to-sea approach can enhance resilience by linking upstream and downstream ecosystems. It showcases cross-sector solutions and policy coherence for climate and biodiversity action along the water continuum.

Convenors: Action Platform for S2S Management, GEF IW, UNEP, SIWI, IUCN

5. Future of Shared Ecosystems in Latin America and the Caribbean
27 August |14:00–15:30 | Room C3
Session ID: 12262
With most of LAC’s water resources shared across borders, this session explores governance, finance, and technology for managing transboundary ecosystems, like the Amazon, Guarani Aquifer, and glaciers, under growing climate pressure.

Convenors: ACTO, GEF/IW:LEARN, IDB, JICA, OAS, UNECE, WRI, TNC
