Regional Larval Fish Workshop for South China Sea

The UNEP/GEF South China Sea Project is working in collaboration with SEAFDEC to develop a regional system of fisheries refugia in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand. A key constraint in the further development of this system is a shortage of information regarding fish habitat and critical life-cycle linkages in Southeast Asia, specifically that relating to fish nursery and spawning areas. The Regional Training Workshop on Larval Fish Identification and Fish Early Life History Science was convened at the SEAFDEC Training Department from 16th-31st May 2007 with the aim of building regional capacity to fill this information gap. It is intended that course participants will form national teams responsible for the processing of larval and juvenile fish samples required to enhance the scientific basis for the identification of important fish spawning and nursery areas to be included in a regional system of fisheries refugia.
