EUROPEAN TERRITORIAL COOPERATION BUILDING BRIDGES BETWEEN PEOPLE (2011)

From the trauma of armed conflicts to the endless queues at customs and complex border controls putting up barriers between people, a lack of cooperation in Europe held back progress after the Second World War. As a result, the desire for economic and political union in Europe grew stronger. In the 1950s, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman set out to create an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe by helping countries and regions to cooperate for the benefit of all.
