What does it take to turn innovative ideas into practical solutions for one of Europe's most threatened marine ecosystems?
On 10 June, the BBSEA Eco-Innovation Challenge reached a major milestone as 27 finalists from around the world gathered in Chișinău, Republic of Moldova, for the Shark Tank Event—the final stage of a months-long journey aimed at identifying innovative solutions to some of the most pressing pollution challenges affecting the Black Sea.

From 186 Applications to 27 Finalists
The journey began with a global call for ideas that attracted 186 applications from 40 countries. The response demonstrated not only the scale of interest in protecting the Black Sea, but also the growing recognition that environmental challenges require fresh thinking, new technologies, and collaboration across borders.
Over the following months, selected participants took part in an intensive process of mentorship, training, technical support, and peer learning. Working closely with experts, practitioners, and fellow innovators, they refined their concepts, strengthened their implementation plans, and explored how their solutions could contribute to reducing pollution and improving environmental outcomes in the region.
The finalists represented a diverse mix of startups, research institutions, private sector companies, and civil society organizations. Their solutions reflected the wide range of environmental pressures facing the Black Sea and its connected river systems. Proposed innovations included technologies to reduce marine litter and microplastic pollution, improve wastewater treatment, prevent agricultural runoff, strengthen environmental monitoring, apply artificial intelligence to pollution management, and restore ecosystems through nature-based solutions.
Fifteen Solutions for the Black Sea
The Shark Tank Event provided an opportunity for innovators to present their solutions before an international jury of experts from environmental, technical, investment, and development backgrounds. Following a highly competitive day of presentations and evaluation, 15 winning solutions were selected.
Nine winners were chosen under the Focus Country Window and will move toward implementation in Georgia, Moldova, and Türkiye. Six winners were selected under the Greater Black Sea Window and will continue developing their innovations through a dedicated acceleration programme that will help strengthen their solutions and prepare them for future growth and impact.
Beyond the competition itself, the Challenge demonstrated the value of bringing together innovators, public institutions, development partners, technical experts, and environmental practitioners around a shared goal. The process created opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and partnerships that will continue long after the final pitches were delivered.

The Next Chapter
As the winning teams move into the next phase, the focus now shifts from ideas to implementation. With continued technical assistance, mentorship, and support, these innovations have the potential to deliver tangible environmental benefits for communities across the region—helping reduce pollution, strengthen resilience, and contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for the Black Sea.

About the project
The Blueing the Black Sea (BBSEA) Program is a regional initiative financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNOPS for the World Bank. It aims to increase the capacity and readiness of governments and the private sector across Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Türkiye to protect the Black Sea and promote sustainable regional development. The project serves as a crucial platform to link policy, innovation, and investment in the region. This includes promoting best practices and supporting new technologies through initiatives like the 'Eco-Innovation Challenge,' ultimately strengthening the region's ability to safeguard its marine resources and secure the livelihoods dependent on them.
