GEF IWCAM establishing suite of indicators

The GEF-IWCAM Project Coordinating Unit, consultants, demonstration projects and participating countries are working together to develop a suite of indicators. The first step in this process was to determine the baseline. To do this the project surveyed all participating countries regarding their current tracking of indicators and other data.

Manila Bay Area Environmental Atlas launched

The Manila Bay Area Environmental Atlas was formally launched on the 9th of November

The launching was led by the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Jose L. Atienza Jr. and PEMSEA Regional Programme Director and Interim Executive Director, Dr. Chua Thia-Eng. The Atlas provides a relevant source of information necessary in policy formulation, planning, decision-making, monitoring, integrated river basin and coastal area management, and in particular, the implementation of the Manila Bay Coastal Strategy.

South China Sea on Google Earth

South China Sea on Google Earth

The South China Sea Project now has its own Google Earth layer, containing information about the project’s institutional network, suite of habitat demonstration sites, and a large number of site characterisations for coastal habitat areas in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand.

IW:LEARN IT Workshop, Beijing

IW:LEARN IT Workshop, Beijing, 5-7 December 07

IW:LEARN held its latest IT Workshop in Beijing, which was kindly hosted by the GEF Hai Basin Integrated Water Resources Management Project. Other GEF IW projects and partners participating at the meeting included the Livestock Waste Management in East Asia Project, Hai Basin Commission, Ningbo Cixi Wetland Project, Shandong Second Environment Project, Liaoning Medium Cities Infrastructure Project and the Guarani Aquifer System Project. IW:LEARN is now working with all participants to develop multilingual websites using its Website Toolkit .

Proposal for “Capacity Building & Expert Exchange Programme 2008 for Analysis of Metals or Organics”

The YSLME Project invites interested, qualified individuals to submit a proposal for the “Capacity Building & Expert Exchange Programme 2008 for Analysis of Metals or Organics”. ***Deadline for proposal submission is 15th February 2008.


The UNEP/GEF South China Sea Project and the GEF Small Grants Programme launched a partnership to promote community involvement in support of the implementation of the Regional Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the South China Sea during the closing session of the 3rd Regional Scientific Conference.


The 9th Global Regional Seas Meeting was held in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the Conference Palace, organized by PERSGA and the UNEP/GPA, under the generous hospitality of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.


PERSGA organized a Regional Technical Workshop on Hydrographic Capacities on 13-14 Nov. 2007 in Jeddah.


The symposium will focus on the key scientific outcomes and other achievements of two regional marine programmes: the Benguela Environment Fisheries Interaction and Training (BENEFIT) Programme and the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) Programme.


The objective of the meeting was to review and introduce modelling techniques into the decision support system for project implementation.


In October 2007 the Mekong River Commission Secretariat hosted a six day study tour by 26 members of the Nile Basin Initiative, representing nine African nations.


The Toolkit is intended to be both an educational guide, a reference document or as a series of stand-alone modules.


The objective of the Conference was to review regional experiences related to nutrient pollution reduction, control and management in he Black Sea - Danube watershed.


XIAMEN, PR CHINA -- The 12th Intergovernmental Meeting of the Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP) was held on 23-25 October at Hotel Ramada in Xiamen, PR China to review and endorse NOWPAP’s work plan and budget for 2008 and 2009. PEMSEA participated in the meeting as an observer and prospective partner.

Calendar of Events for January 2008


This month sees the launch of three International Year events:

International Year of the Reef 2008 (a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them)

International Year of Planet Earth (a joint initiative by UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS))

International Year of Sanitation 2008 (to raise awareness and to accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target to reduce by half the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation by 2015).
