UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)

by Khristine Custodio last modified Nov 19, 2013 09:37 AM
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification is committed to a bottom-up approach, encouraging the participation of local people in combating desertification and land degradation. Its secretariat facilitates cooperation between developed and developing countries, particularly around knowledge and technology transfer for sustainable land management.

The Convention’s 195 parties work together to improve the living conditions for people in drylands, to maintain and restore land and soil productivity, and to mitigate the effects of drought. The UNCCD is particularly committed to a bottom-up approach, encouraging the participation of local people in combating desertification and land degradation. The UNCCD secretariat facilitates cooperation between developed and developing countries, particularly around knowledge and technology transfer for sustainable land management.

UNCCD establishes regional cooperation by exchanging experiences and creating concepts to combat desertification, land degradation and drought. It reports on the resource use trends, assists in the identification of action points, integrates into the national agenda on sustainable development and poverty alleviation, and gains political support in the regions.
