Wiolab annual report 2006

The broad goal of the Project “Addressing land-based Activities in the Western Indian Ocean (WIOLaB)” is to address the degradation of the marine and coastal environment due to land-based activities in countries bordering the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The Project is designed to serve as a demonstration project of UNEP’s Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA) and aims to achieve three specific objectives: (i) Improve the information base and demonstrate guidelines and strategies for the reduction of stress to the ecosystem by improved water and sediment quality; (ii) Strengthen the regional legal basis for preventing land-based sources of pollution; and (iii) Develop regional capacity and strengthen institutions for sustainable, less polluting development.
