The Gulf of Guinea is recognised by the countries bordering it as being very importance for their socio-economic well-being. All along the coast, there are major urban human settlements as well as industries and harbours. The coastal environment maintains lagoons, estuaries, bays, creeks, etc. which together with the sea itself provide a major source of livelihood for the populations of the countries bordering the Gulf.Unfortunately, the human settlements and the diverse economic activities along the coast have tended to affect the health of the marine and coastal environment.
