Improved basket trap fishing launched in South Coast

06 Feb 2014 | by kcdp.co.ke
KCDP has developed an improved fish trap technology aimed at increasing the value of catches and also conserve the environment. This is a joint effort between Wild Conservation Society (WCS), State Department of Fisheries and KMFRI. The move is aimed at identifying the number of key exploited species and establishing stock status.

Conducted in Vanga and Jimbo in Kwale County the activity involved the inclusion of a gate on traditional “Malema” trap to allow non-target fish and juveniles to escape and determine the size and value of the yield in comparison to the traditional traps.
