Optimising information delivery in the Baltic Sea - PRESS RELEASE

14 June 2013, Helsinki, Finland – The work plans of HELCOM related to the Baltic Sea monitoring and assessment activities and regional coordination on programmes of measures will be discussed today in the Meeting of HELCOM GEAR Group, continuing from yesterday. The major goal of GEAR is to ensure the implementation of ecosystem approach, and in the Meeting, senior Group members will focus on activities and deliverables from 2013 up to 2021.

The Fourth meeting of the HELCOM GEAR Group addresses the coordination of HELCOM’s activities and looks at how HELCOM can contribute best to the implementation of global level decisions. These include resolutions adopted by the global ministerial environment forum under United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Governing Council, and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Similarly, the GEAR Group serves as a regional coordination platform for those HELCOM Contacting Parties that are also EU members, implying that the Fourth Meeting will outline activities to contribute to the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
