FFA HQ, Honiara, SOLOMON ISLANDS--A milestone treaty for cooperation on regional fisheries surveillance against illegal fishers is set to take on new strength in 2014. The Cook Islands this month ratified the Agreement on Strengthening Implementation of the Niue Treaty on Cooperation in Fisheries Surveillance and Law Enforcement in the South Pacific, also known as the NTSA.

All FFA members are signatories to the 1992 Niue Treaty on Cooperation in Fisheries Surveillance and Law Enforcement in the South Pacific. It provides the umbrella for a range of subsidiary agreements aimed at protecting fisheries resources as a major source of food and income for the Pacific people. Signing or signature of any treaty by Pacific governments confirms the interest by states to continue the treaty-making process, and to commit to implementing the treaty.
