Regional Training for Decision-Makers from Arabic Speaking Countries (January 2008)

The seminar was organized jointly with the Arab Water Council (AWC), the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), The Water Quality Management Unit (WQMU) and the Egyptian Branch of Delft-Environment.

His Excellency Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) and President of the Arab Water Council (AWC) made the opening remarks in attendance of representatives from different organizations (UNDP, WB-GEF, EU, UNESCO, Dutch Embassy, etc.). and the Head of the Egyptian Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, Dr. Abdel Kawy Khalifa presented on the Holding Company and the condition of municipal wastewater management in urban and in rural areas in Egypt.

A field trip was organised to a low cost-WW treatment technology adopted by the WQMU, MWRI as well as to the first anaerobic WW treatment system in Egypt, the UASB reactor in Fayoum governorate funded by the Dutch embassy in cooperation with Egyptian and Dutch consultants. Dr. Dia Al Kosy, presented the Lake Manzala engineered wetland project (a UNDP-GEF project successfully handed over to the Egyptian authorities).  The course was conducted in the Arabic language.

30 decision-makers from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, the Occupied Palestine Territory, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen trained. A concept was developed for creating a network for regional exchange of experiences and best practices under the leadership of the Arab Water Council.
