The major activities, outputs and outcomes over the past 14 years serve as the foundation on which new initiatives and action programs are being developed and undertaken from 2007 to 2010.
Over the past decade, substantial efforts have been directed to
addressing the many threats to environmental and economic
sustainability of marine and coastal ecosystems by governments and
other stakeholders in the East and Southeast Asian region. Many of
these initiatives were sustained and
consolidated as a consequence of a series of strategic projects made
possible through the support of the Global Environment Facility, United
Nations agencies and other bilateral and multilateral donors and
financial institutions. Partnerships in Environmental Management for
the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) is one such
initiative. Over its 14-year existence, PEMSEA has evolved from a
regional project into a regional operating mechanism focused on the
environmental challenges and sustainable development of the Seas of
East Asia.
