Technical Adviser, Marine Environment Division (IMO)

Under the direction of the Chief Technical Adviser (CTA) of the Programme, as well as in close co-ordination with country offices and regional organizations, the incumbent will perform a variety of technical advisory and programme/project management services in support of technical activities to be performed in the framework of the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloBallast Partnerships Programme (Application Deadline: 5 February 2012).

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical support to participating countries and regional partners through all stages of the project cycle especially on matters related to legal, policy and institutional reforms to address ballast water
    issues and related capacity building activities.
  • Facilitate information exchange and the maintenance of the communications network between and
    among project related institutions and individuals.
  • Manage a regular gathering of information on ballast water management options, related research
  • projects and their results, as well as on new bioinvasion cases, and on related financial implications.
  • Identification and liaison with potential and actual co-financing agencies and institutions.

Qualifications

  • Post graduate degree in marine science, maritime law, environmental law, biodiversity science, environmental science, environmental policy, environmental economics, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of five years relevant experience in dealing with marine environmental protection or experience with maritime transportation issues.
  • Experience in the area of ballast water management issue and/or marine biosafety would be an asset.
  • Working experience in an international organization is an advantage, in particular, experience of IMO, UNDP and GEF activities.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English; knowledge of other IMO official languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian), an advantage.
