Senior Adviser Marine Geophysicist - SOPAC
Applications are invited for the position of Senior Adviser - Marine Geophysics to be based within the Ocean and Islands Programme of the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC), located in Suva, Fiji Islands. Currently SOPAC is an independent regional organisation but it is very likely to become a new Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) on 1st January 2011.
Under the direction of the Ocean and Islands Programme Manager the Senior Adviser - Marine Geophysics will:
- 1 Develop, plan and implement marine geophysical programmes of work having relevance and significance to the peoples and governments of SOPAC member countries enabling them to improve their capacities, plan, manage and develop their ocean and island resources and environments. The incumbent should be capable of independent action, be able to set priorities in the designated areas of responsibility, and be proactive in developing new areas of work within identified objectives and strategies.
- 2 Should have experience in natural resource assessment and development with a sound knowledge of appropriate methods, technologies, instruments and equipment for resource assessment and monitoring of environmental change. Experience in policy development and the provision resource management advice advantageous.
- 3 Should also possess a high level of interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.
Applicants should have a Postgraduate degree in geophysics and/or related geoscience qualifications; and at least 10 years working experience in leading marine geophysical survey, analysis and reporting together with excellent written and oral skills in English.
The salary and benefit package offered for this position is commensurate with terms and conditions of the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP).
