Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) Secretary (GEF Office)

UNEP and Global Environment Facility seek a highly motivated leader of the Secretariat based in the North America Regional office of the United Nations Environment Programme (Washington DC), and works with eminent scientists to advise the Global Environment Facility. The GEF is an independent financial organization which unites 180 member governments in partnership with international institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to address global environmental issues (Application Deadline: 26 March 2010).

Duties and Responsibilities

With the support of the six person Secretariat the Secretary, Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) organizes and oversees the advice provided by STAP to the GEF Council, GEF Secretariat, and Implementing Agencies, in natural resources management, climate change and/or chemicals management. Duties include appraising STAP’s science panel of strategic scientific and technical issues affecting GEF, and mobilizing scientific and technical expertise through networks of scientific institutions so that STAP functions as an effective conduit between the GEF and the scientific community at large. The Secretary also supervises the day-to-day functioning of the STAP Secretariat and provides management, coordination, and administrative support to the STAP Panel.

Qualifications

The successful candidate has an advanced university degree in natural, environmental or social sciences and at least ten years of relevant work experience in managing international scientific and technical programmes of which seven at international level. Experience in project management is essential, with developing country experience an advantage. Extensive knowledge of global environmental issues, preferably in the context of GEF activities.
