Post Doctoral Researcher in International Water Law (IHP-HELP Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science, UNESCO, Graduate School of Natural Resources Law, Policy and Management College of Arts and Social Sciences)

Applications are sought for an exciting new research post based within the internationally renowned University of Dundee IHP-HELP Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science, under the auspices of UNESCO, part of the Graduate School of Natural Resources Law, Policy and Management (College of Arts and Social Sciences). Application deadline: 31 March 2011 (0.7 FTE).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a research programme in public international law as it relates to water resources management (water security; governance; conflict prevention; UN Charter principles of regional peace and security), specifically assisting the Director of the Centre, Professor Patricia Wouters in this research area.
  • The post will include research assistance for the Director, including delivery of first-rate peer-reviewed publications; seeking and writing up relevant research council grants and project proposals; assisting with the uptake and effective delivery of the research, including relevant research-related activities under the Water Law, Water Leaders graduate teaching/training programme.

Qualifications

  • It is expected that you will hold a first degree in law, with public international law experience, and at least an LLM in law, with preferably a PhD in law, with research experience in the following areas: public international law in the area of water resources management (or a closely related field); regional peace and security and conflict prevention; United Nations Charter; governance; with research in the following areas considered desirable: integrated catchment management at the transboundary level; the legal regime governing ecosystem services management at the transboundary level; stakeholder engagement in international law; poverty alleviation through effective international legal regimes.
  • Strong writing abilities (in English), and solid communication skills and the ability to work within a trans-disciplinary team will be essential, as will a proven track record in conducting high quality research related to this field.
  • Experience in publishing research in internationally, peer-reviewed journals, and a track record of grant-getting and research projects in this area, especially under Research councils, is highly desirable. 
  • The ability to edit, deliver to deadlines, and experience in working in international contexts are desirable.
