Policy Officer for Western Balkans (WWF MedPO)
WWF Mediterranean Programme Office is searching for a WWF Policy Officer for Western Balkans (POWB). He/she will lead WWF MedPO’s efforts in supporting and facilitating the introduction and adaptation of key EU nature protection standards, integration of environment in accession support plans, and alignment to EU legislation in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia. POWB will ensure that the process makes a positive contribution to political and economic development while preserving and enhancing the environmental and social capital of these countries. WWF Mediterranean Programme Office (WWF MedPO) is supporting conservation and sustainable management of forest, marine and freshwater ecosystems in the Mediterranean, with a special focus on the priority Dinaric Arc and South West Mediterranean ecoregions, and on critical regional policies. WWF MedPO adopts approaches ranging from field projects, to policy and advocacy, to communications and capacity building, and works with an extended network of partnerships.
Major Functions and Responsibilities:
WWF Policy Officer for Western Balkans will:
- analyze, monitor and provide recommendations for improving national legislative and international funding frameworks related to EU accession process and environment;
- identify and develop opportunities for lobbying, communications and advocacy work at local and EU-level;
- facilitate national and regional collaboration between national authorities and NGOs on adoption of EU nature protection and environmental standards and integration of environment in all relevant policies and plans ;
- facilitate dialogue between local and EU authorities;
- bring the experience and resources of WWF Mediterranean Programme Office, Danube-Carpathian Programme Office, WWF European Policy Office and pan-European network of WWF national organizations to policy work in the region.
Requirements:
- A degree in the broad area of environmental science, natural resources science, environmental law, political science or related fields is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of EU nature-conservation and environment legislation, EU accession process and practical experience in working with EU institutions is essential
- Experience in interacting with government institutions and NGOs in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, Aid Agency donors and regional organizations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in local language and English are required
- Competence in other languages, particularly French and/or other Mediterranean languages would be an advantage
- Experience in advocacy, communications and campaigning work is highly desirable
- Self-motivation, good organizational skills, demonstrated excellence in multi-stakeholder project management
- Understanding of the Mediterranean region geography, societies, economies, politics and pertinent issues of conservation and development
- Ability to work in teams and motivate partners and colleagues
