IWMI Communications Specialist, Africa
IWMI seeks to hire a well qualified Communications Specialist to be responsible for the development and implementation of communication work plans and activities. The Communications Specialist should be able to identify and distill key messages from our scientific research and present this in ways that capture attention and stimulate action.
It is envisaged in the first instance that the Africa Communications Specialist will work on the IMAWESA (Improved Management of Agricultural Water in Eastern and Southern Africa) network, other projects in the region and also contribute to corporate information and communications.
The position reports to the Director, Communications and Marketing with day to day supervision by the Regional Director Africa with whom the position is co-located. The location will be either the IWMI West Africa Office in Accra, Ghana or IWMI East Africa & Nile Basin Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is a non-profit, scientific organization engaged in research and capacity building activities for developing countries. Our mission is to overcome poverty through the better management of land and water resources. Working with diverse partners and supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), IWMI seeks to translate its research findings into actionable recommendations for policymakers, resource managers and poor rural communities. IWMI is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka and has regional offices located in 12 countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Overall Purpose:
To provide communciations support for IWMI’s research projects in the Africa region.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and implement communication strategies for research projects and initiatives;

Develop communication tools for targeted audiences eg brochures, flyers, posters, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters and websites;

Write and edit communication materials;

Coordinate and supervise production of communication tools with input from partners and suppliers both nationally and internationally;

Organize media activities and write media releases and prepare press kits;

Support IWMI partners’ communications within initiatives;

Work closely with IWMI’s corporate communications group to ensure messages are aligned and IWMI is appropriately represented in all communications;

Contribute to regional and project information for IWMI’s corporate communication outlets.
