Deputy Head – Global Marine Programme (IUCN)
The IUCN Global Marine Programme (GMP) has experienced significant growth in terms of project activities and team members in the past few years. In order for the Programme to consolidate its progress to date with a view to expanding its influence in the future, a Deputy Head is required to support the Head in developing and running the Programme. The Deputy Head’s primary focus will be managing staff, building and maintaining relationships with other IUCN component programmes and members, developing strategies, programmes and projects, and ensuring quality delivery of programme activities. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as Acting Head as needed
- Provide technical and management supervision for GMP staff directly engaged in implementing projects (the Deputy Head will in general not manage projects directly)
- Assist GMP staff in developing and maintaining project implementation plans
- Provide advice on strategy, approach, and overcoming obstacles in project implementation
- Ensure high quality donor reports and project outputs
- Manage donor and partner relations as needed
- Lead the development and monitoring of GMP intersessional and annual work plans
- Develop intersessional plan, ensuring links with other IUCN component programmes and members
- Develop annual work plans and corresponding fundraising strategies
- Supervise development and submission of annual budgets
- Ensure GMP activities are contributing to GMP strategy and work plans
- The successful candidate will hold an advanced or post-graduate
degree (MSc or PhD) in some area of marine biology or ecology,
conservation, policy, or resource management; with at least 10 years of
experience and 6 years of international experience. A strong track
record in management is a requirement.
- The position also requires experience in project design and management, fundraising and communication. An excellent command of English is essential. Understanding of French, Spanish and additional languages is a major advantage.
- The successful candidate will be expected to be fully computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office and major software packages.
- This position carries considerable responsibility and autonomy and requires good organisational capacity, good interpersonal and networking skills and a willingness to work in a multilingual environment as part of a team working to a common objective.
- Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their language and computing skills during the selection process, and interviews will be held in the official IUCN languages.
