Communications Officer (MedPAN Association/MedPAN South Project-WWF)

Based in Hyères near Marseilles in France at the headquarters of the MedPAN association, the Communications Officer will work closely with WWF Mediterranean and MPA practitioners across the Mediterranean. He/she will be pivotal in animating the network of Mediterranean MPA managers, and play a key role in raising the profile among target audiences of the value and role of MPAs in the region (Application deadline: 31 August 2009).

Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications Officer will plan and implement comprehensive and strategic communications activities for the MedPAN association and also for MedPAN South – a regional project developed by WWF in the framework of MedPAN to strengthen the management effectiveness of MPAs in the south and east of the Mediterranean Sea.

Main responsibilities

  • Assess communications context, needs and opportunities, and analyse the preferences of target audiences; elaborate and regularly update comprehensive communications strategy.
  • Plan and implement a broad range of communications tools and activities – ranging from proactive/reactive media relations, online communications and events, to newsletters, publications, visual comms – and overseeing external providers where appropriate. 
  • Internal communications among MedPAN members and partners.
  • Plan and supervise appropriate budget expenditure for communications activities.
  • Monitor and analyse communications results, including media coverage.
  • Report on MedPAN comms achievements for project donors and funding proposals.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in an international communications role, with a degree in communications, journalism, international relations or a related subject.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and diplomacy skills, and good organization.
  • Team player who is also autonomous and has a strong sense of project ownership.
  • Ability to present information clearly, accurately and to a range of audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Up-to-date knowledge and understanding of new media in the communications mix.
  • Interest in and understanding of environmental – especially marine – issues.
  • Fluent working knowledge of French and English, other Med languages an advantage.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • A strong commitment to WWF and MedPAN’s mission and values.
