At the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) and in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) (most recently reaffirmed in 2005), the world’s political leaders adopted a farreaching set of goals, targets, and timetables to improve the quality of the ocean environment and the lives of people living in coastal areas and small islands.

As stated above, the goal of the project is to foster a global South-South and South-to-North dialogue, through the Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands, on the implementation of the activities aimed towards the achievement of JPOI targets and timetables related to oceans, coastal areas and islands, with a special focus on SIDS and the interlinkages between freshwater and the coastal and marine environment. This GEF Project will assist the developing countries and countries with economies in transition to put the Oceans, Coasts, and Islands issues on the high political agenda of their governmental policies and strategies.

The Global Conference on Oceans and Coasts at Rio+10: Toward the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg took place on December 3-7, 2001 at UNESCO, Paris. The Conference involved over 400 participants from 60 countries, assembling an array of experts from a diverse range of sectors including governments, United Nations agencies and other intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) representing environmental, industry, and scientific/technical perspectives.
FileWorkshop on Governance of Marine Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction: Management Issues and Policy Options Report
TheWorkshop was part of an informal process to bring together major relevant interests to facilitate open and constructive multi-stakeholder dialogue to inform and support the formal processes which have been or may be established by the UN General Assembly regarding this issue. The intent is to contribute to clarifying the issues, laying out various perspectives, developing options, and identifying possible avenues for consensus-building among disparate interests.

The Global forum on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands has undertaken a strategic planning effort for the period 2006-2016 to develop policy recommendations for specific next steps needed to advance the global oceans agenda aimed at governments, UN agencies, NGOs, industry, and scientific groups. To this effect, Working Groups have been organized around 12 major topic areas related to the global oceans commitments made at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and to emerging issues facing the global oceans community.
