The theme of the World Water Day 2012 is "Water and Food Security: The World is Thirsty Because We are Hungry" and it is celebrated on 22 March. New Handbook for Integrated Water Resources Management in the Basins of Transboundary Rivers, Lakes and Aquifers This publication was launched at the 6thWorld Water Forum in Marseille by the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO), the Global Water Partnership (GWP), UNECE, UNESCO, GEF, EVREN and AFD who worked together to produce it.

The "Third workshop on water and adaptation to climate change in transboundary basins: Making adaptation work" will take place on 25 and 26 April 2012 in the Palais des Nations in Geneva, back-to-back with the fifth meeting of the Task Force on Water and Climate (27 April 2012). The International Roundtable on Protection and Sustainable Use of Transboundary Waters in Southeastern Europe was held on the 15th and 16th of December 2011 in Zagreb, Croatia. It was was organized and supported by the German Ministry of Environment in cooperation with the Croatian Ministry of Regional Development Forestry and Water Management, GEF IWLEARN, World Bank and Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP-Med) under the Petersberg Phase II / Athens Declaration Process.

The Capacity Building Workshop on “Flood Management in a Transboundary Context” was organized on the 13th and 14th of December in Zagreb, Croatia, under the Petersberg Phase II / Athens Declaration Process by the Global Water Partnership- Mediterranean (GWP-Med) with the support of the German Ministry of Environment and GEF IWLEARN.

The Training Workshop on “How to connect policy and science for an improved water management: A practical introduction to application of knowledge brokering in the Sava River Basin Management Planning” that was held from the 30th of November to the 2nd of December 2011 in Zagreb, Croatia was proved to be fruitful and lucrative. read more

On 25 November 2011 in Tirana, Albania the five Drin River Riparians signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a Shared Strategic Vision for the Sustainable Management of the Drin River Basin for the benefit of about 1.5 million people relying on the water resources of the basin for drinking water, agriculture, fisheries, industry and hydropower. Recent floods, in particular, have highlighted the need for such closer transboundary cooperation. Ministers and Deputy Ministers responsible for water issues from Albania, Greece, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo (UNSC 1244) and Montenegro signed the Memorandum, which represents a significant step forward in the development of transboundary cooperation in the Drin Basin. read more

The 8th Meeting of the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development was organized on the 15th of December 2010 in Cairo, Egypt. The Meeting was organized by the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) and the Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean (GWP-Med), which jointly facilitate the Secretariat of COMPSUD. read more

Greece has this month become the 21st country to ratify a global water treaty designed to reduce conflict and guide joint management over rivers and lakes forming or crossing international boundaries. read more
