The Benguela Current runs parallel to the coastline of South West Africa, from East of Cape Agulhas in South Africa to Northern Angola, and comprises one of four major coastal upwelling systems globally. The Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) is one of the World’s most productive marine environments, supporting a rich marine life, including numerous fish, sea birds and marine mammals. Coastal communities have harvested the marine resources of the Benguela Current for millennia. The fishing industry has become an economic mainstay in the region, and provides an important source of livelihoods.
