The development objective of the Guangdong Pearl River Delta Urban Environment Project is to assist in addressing the environmental problems of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province and the South China Sea, through the improvement and rationalization of environmental service delivery based on a regional planning approach. The extension is necessary to complete all the ongoing and planned works for the pilot investment of inter-municipal environment infrastructure component, establishment of a water quality monitoring system, and consultancy support to promote private sector participation in hazardous waste management, all of which are still under implementation and should be completed by the end of 2011. The borrower has in place an action plan acceptable to the Bank to complete the project. The closing date for the project will be extended from December 31, 2010 until December 31, 2011. This will be the second extension of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant closing date.
