The general project objective is to catalyze a more integrated approach to water resource management in the Neretva River Basin in order to improve the integrity of the ecosystem. The global environmental objective is to conserve the water and land resources, and biodiversity of an globally important watershed. The development objective is to improve the ecosystem functioning of a transboundary river basin. The project aims to demonstrate and measure the benefits of a transboundary ecosystem management approach, utilizing integrated water management principles, in relationship to the improvement of water and land resources use, and biodiversity conservation. The proposed project will develop joint strategies for dealing with common issues and problems; define a mechanism for implementing those strategies; and support implementation of the strategies. The project will establish credibility for regional ecosystem management and prove the value of binational cooperation.
