During the last four months, our team in Central Kalimantan has been working to provide as much useful information about mercury as possible to the entire community of Kereng Pangi. We have been working closely with schools, health clinics, and gold shops in the township, as well as groups of artisanal miners in the goldfields.

This issue highlights fieldwork conducted at project sites as the GMP moves toward completing its implementation objectives. The Project Coordination Unit is working closely with Assistant Country Focal Points and many local implementation partners to introduce Technical Demonstration Units, launch mercury awareness campaigns, and return the results of health assessments to people in communities. In addition, an expanded policy group is collaborating with national experts to draft and revise regulatory reforms dealing with mercury use, while looking at trade, regional policy frameworks, community development, and economic policy.

In this issue we highlight the results from the environmental and health assessments conducted in mercury-affected hotspots in Brazil, Indonesia and Tanzania as well as the follow-up activities for the dissemination of results and training of local health authorities. Additionally we will report on training activities for laboratory technicians in applying state of the art methods in monitoring mercury pollution.

This issue highlights the strategy for implementation of the demonstration units as well as the situation of the artisanal miners in Lao PDR. The Project Coordination Unit (PCU) and the Governmental counterparts recognize that education is the key for effective measures in reducing mercury emissions in developing countries. Hands-on training will be provided to miners and other stakeholders. The training units proposed by GMP go after miners and not vice-versa. The rampant use of mercury as a result of the high gold price must be combated at the source.

In this issue we highlight the news that CETEM has completed the field work for the Environmental and Health Assessment (E&HA) of mercury impacts in Brazil and Indonesia. In Tanzania, BGS also finished its fieldwork in the Rwamagasa area (drainage to the Tanganyika Lake) where biological, geological and human samples where collected to be analyzed. In Zimbabwe, the French Institute, BRGM has been conducting the Environmental Assessment in the Kadoma-Chakari region.

In this issue we highlight the decision of the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to give GMP the benefit of their advisory services and technical field support. In addition to USEPA, WHO Jakarta declared their interest in supporting health related programs for mercury-affected mining communities in Indonesia. Another good news is the completion of the Protocols and Questionnaires for the Environmental and Health Assessment (E&HA) of mercury impacts in hotspot areas.

Artisanal mining encompasses small, medium, informal, legal and illegal miners who use rudimentary processes to extract more than 30 different mineral substances worldwide.

Artisanal Gold Miners in Kourossa and Mandiana, Guinea, Africa
The footage presented in this video was filmed in April of 2006 by Marcello Veiga on a mission to Guinea sponsored by the Blacksmith Institute and UNIDO. It presents the methods being used in Guinea to mine for ore and concentrate gold.

Tapajos Region Brazilian Amazon Artisanal Gold Mining June 2006
This short video was filmed in June of 2006 around the Gold mining community of Creporizao, Para Brazil. Footage includes a Bahanco operation using sluices to concentrate alluvial gold as well as current attempts to reforest previously mined areas.
