SWIOFP-Project Summary
The Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) is considered a distinct biogeographical province of the Indo-West Pacific, with high levels of regional endemism. Although waters of the region are considered oligotrophic, with relatively low fish biomass, there is significant diversity among fish species. The region has a high diversity of “charismatic” species, including at least 20 species of cetaceans, five species of marine turtles, numerous seabirds, and an important remnant population of the threatened dugong.
