FileNEWSFLASH 19: November 2006 for SWIOFP
While the project appraisal document was being finalised, the grant agreements were being actively negotiated, a project implementation manual was being developed and activities of some Southwester Indian Ocean Fisheries project Components were being planned in greater detail. Although the negotiations have taken considerably longer than planned, the Project is still on track to commence with Component 1 starting early in 2007. This newsflash details some of these developments.

There has been a flurry of activity to finalise the Project Appraisal Document for final approval. This has involved considerable negotiations and financial planning. As Southwester Indian Ocean Fisheries project approaches the final stages of its development phase before implementation, so the secretariat, the task team leader and others have put finishing touches to Project Appraisal Document for final approval and funding support.

There continues to be good progress with the development of Southwester Indian Ocean Fisheries project as several of the Theme Working Groups have now finalised plans to hold their workshops. The products of these Theme Workshops will be collated into the overall GEF proposal.

Good news from several fronts can be reported, including the successful completion of the second of the Southwester Indian Ocean Fisheries project Theme Groups, dealing with data management, hosted by the Kenya Marine & Fisheries Research Institute Mombasa.

The first of the Theme Working Groups is the Science Plan Group, which held its workshop in Cape Town recently. Plans for the others themes are being finalised. Southwester Indian Ocean Fisheries project continues to attract attention and is developing linkages with numerous other initiatives in the region.
FileNEWSFLASH: MAY 2003 for SWIOFP
Following on from the two plenary planning meetings held in December 2000 and September 2002, there has been a period of consolidation and planning in the Southwester Indian Ocean Fisheries project programme. Certain administrative arrangements, between the World Bank and the Southwester Indian Ocean Fisheries project secretariat, required finalization before significant further progress could be made. These have now been finalised and the following progress can be reported.

The South Western Indian Ocean Fisheries Project (SWIOFP) was initiated in April 2008 to assess the current status of offshore fisheries within the 200 nautical miles Exclusive Economic Zone of the African states bordering the South West Indian Ocean region.

An Instrumented longline (ILL) training cruise was recently imp l eme n t e d b y SWIOF P a n d i t s French partner IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) on board the FV “Brahma” in Reunion Island. The training cruise took place from the 23rd of February to the 3rd of March 2011 and had the participation of six of the eight SWIOFP countries - Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles.
