The International Watersheds Initiative: Implementing a New Paradigm for Transboundary Basins
To this end, the IJC has developed and begun implementing its
International Watersheds Initiative (IWI) over the past decade. The IWI
was created on the premise that water resource and environmental
problems can be anticipated, prevented, or resolved at the local level.
Rather than simply measuring the quantity or quality of border lakes and
rivers in isolation, the IWI promotes an integrated ecosystem approach
to watershed preservation that acknowledges the complex
interrelationships in the entire watershed.
