Sustainability of Large Marine Ecosystems (LME): Bridging the Governance and Socio-economics Gap

The aims to advance the Governance and Socio-economic Modules of LMEs by enhancing the capacity of scientists, policy makers and managers from developing countries and countries in transition involved in Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) initiatives. Specifically, the workshop will discuss alternative governance structures and processes, self-financing strategies, frameworks and indicators to measure progress for adaptive management under TDA/SAP regimes and strengthen the linkages between the five LME modules. Twenty two participants from nine LMEs will share their experiences and learn new tools and techniques at this initial workshop. The major output of the workshop will be a handbook on the Governance and Socioeconomics of LMEs. This product will be available and applicable to all LMEs and perhaps the other IW projects which apply the TDA/SAP process. The workshop is being led by the University of Rhode Island's Coastal Resources Center, in collaboration with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with support from GEF IW:LEARN.
