SUMMARY:Cities of the Future 2010
DESCRIPTION:Population growth\, social inequity\, economic turmoil\, c
limate change\, water shortages and environmental degradation are plac
ing unprecedented stress on infrastructure and ecosystems while at the
same time technological advances\, volunteerism and citizens of susta
inability offer promise for the future. 'Cities of the Future' will co
 nnect energy-efficient engineered infrastructure with green\, water-ce
ntric landscapes to protect and conserve water resources\, reduce ener
gy intensity and associated carbon footprints\, and improve economic v
itality and quality of life. This paradigm shift\, for newly created e
co-cities and existing urban communities alike\, necessitates innovati
ve ways of conceptualizing urban infrastructure that move away from tr
 aditional practices of centralized\, linear\, once-through water and e
nergy flow towards decentralized facilities and closed water and energ
 y systems.
