The Fourth Inter-American Dialogue on Water Management is an outgrowth of Agenda 21, established during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The Dialogue is a vehicle for the discussion and exchange of water resources management experiences in the Americas. Dialogues held to date are: DIALOGUE I - Miami 1993 DIALOGUE II - Buenos Aires 1996 DIALOGUE III - Panama 1999 At the Dialogue III in Panama, the Brazilian Government, represented by the Ministry of Environment, was invited by the Organization of the American States (OAS) and by the Inter-American Water Resource Network (IWRN), to convene the Fourth Inter-American Dialogue on Water Management in Brazil. This initiative reflected the international interest in current efforts underway in Brazil to implement a national water resources management policy.

International Conference on Freshwater

The German Government hosted the International Conference on Freshwater in Bonn from 3-7 December 2001 in close co-operation with the United Nations. With this Conference Germany hoped to contribute to the solution to global freshwater problems and to support preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002 and the Third World Water Forum in Kyoto 2003. The Conference developed Recommendations for Action in three important cross-sectoral areas: governance, management and partnerships; mobilising financial resources; capacity building and sharing knowledge. The Bonn Keys point to the main areas of necessary political attention, thus making them more substantial for the public. What we need is awareness political awareness as well as public awareness to meet the water security needs of the poor.

The Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) are sponsoring the international specialty conference WATERSHED 2002. Building on the precedent set by WEF's past conferences in the Mid-Atlantic, Rocky Mountain, and the Pacific Northwest regions, WATERSHED 2002 will explore the challenges of managing the world's watersheds while highlighting the unique issues of the southeast United States. Every two years, this conference brings together environmental professionals for a showcase on integrated resource management and environmental protection principles using watershed-based approaches.

11th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species

The introduction of non-indigenous aquatic invasive species is an ongoing problem that is increasing in frequency. Although the zebra mussel may be the most widely known invader, there are numerous other alien pathogen, invertebrate, fish and plant species that are causing significant damage to coastal and freshwater ecosystems, and to the economies that depend upon them. The US Army Engineer Research and Development Centre was the host sponsor of the 11th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species. This annual four-day conference is widely considered the most comprehensive forum for the review of accumulated scientific knowledge, presentation of the latest field research, introduction of new technological developments for prevention, monitoring, control and mitigation, and discussion of policy, legislation, public education and outreach initiatives related to aquatic invasive species.

International Coastal Zone Development and Management

In coastal areas of the world, high population densities, linked with urban growth, expanding tourism and industrialization represent major threats to natural resources and biological diversity. One cannot deny the negative impact of uncontrolled development on destabilizing ecosystem, changing land use patterns making communities vulnerable to sea storm and creating demands on the ecological resources of the worlds. The Environment Public Authority (EPA), State of Kuwait is pleased to announce the hosting in March 2002, of the International Conference on Coastal Zone Management and Development. ICCZMD is the first of its series organized by EPA. It is a multi-disciplinary international conference convened for scientists, engineers and managers to discuss the latest advances in the scientific understanding, engineering and environmental issues of coastal processes. The conference provides a forum for the exchange of information and will provide the opportunity to visit the water front and coastal sites of North-Western part of the Arabian Gulf as well as the coral reef islands.

Salt water intrusion has been a main concern in many groundwater aquifers throughout the world. To deal with them, and learn from each other, Salt Water Intrusion Meetings (SWIM) have been held since 1968, in different places in Europe, usually every other year. The last one took place on Wolin Island, Poland, in 2000. The meetings bring together specialists interested in the different aspects of salt water encroachment into aquifers. The meetings deal with problems around coastal areas, but inland salinization phenomena are also considered.
