Introduction

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is the sole organization within the UN system mandated to promote international cooperation and coordinate programmes in marine scientific research, observations, services and capacity-building. The Commission aims to improve management practices and the decision-making process of its Member States, foster sustainable development, and protect the marine environment. It is within this context that IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (IOC/WESTPAC) has organized, since its establishment in 1989, a series of symposia which has been serving as a regional platform for marine scientists from different backgrounds to address growing challenges, particular to the region, in the key areas of interaction between the society and the oceans. Sharing the spirit to promote regional cooperation, the Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs (MLTM) of the Republic of Korea and the IOC/WESTPAC have joined hands to organize the 8th IOC/WESTPAC International Scientific Symposium entitled Ocean Climate and Marine Ecosystems in the Western Pacific, in Busan, Republic of Korea, 28-31 March, 2011.

Objective

The objective of the Symposium is to bring together marine scientists, particularly young scientists inside and outside the region with a view to encouraging an interdisciplinary approach towards the management and sustainable development of coasts and oceans with growing challenges of climate change.
