Course focus
The current status of the world’s living aquatic resources varies but the number of fish stocks in trouble seems to exceed the number that is in a
good or excellent state. The causes are many, but overfishing is a major one for which fisheries managers are often blamed. Its complexity,
diversity and dynamics and the involvement of a large number of stakeholders, makes fisheries and aquaculture difficult to govern.
Aims and objectives
The course aims to provide the participants with the opportunity to:
- Become familiar with various perspectives on fisheries management.
- Learn about fisheries governance and co-management concepts, challenges faced in governance and co-management and explore the possibilities, and pre-conditions of good (enough) governance.
- Learn about Multi-Stakeholder Processes in fisheries management and practice a range of participatory methodologies and tools.
- Become familiar with the tools available to the fisheries manager for controlling fishing effort.
