by Ludovic Bernaudat, UNIDO We all realize that Government, national and international institutions, industry and society in general become more and more conscious of the burden imposed on our planet by the unsustainable use of resources and release of toxic chemicals. In most of small-scale mining activities, it is the lack of awareness and technical knowledge that results in uncontrolled land degradation, over consumption of water and release of toxic chemicals to the environment. This problem particularly affects developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America where artisanal mining represents the only alternative to the subsistence farming activities for rural population.
