Since its establishment in 1973, the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) has been striving to achieve higher standards in ocean science and technology, and to secure public understanding of, and commitment to, the role of the marine sector in the national development of public welfare. <p> With the continued and enthusiastic support of the government and public sectors and through a difficult economic and restructuring period, KORDI has become a stronger institute in terms of size and quality, with a budget of almost US$ 78,000,000 and about 700 employees. <p> KORDI is currently carrying out researches on climate change, marine ecosystem responses and prediction in the East Sea, marine ranching, Saemankum reclamation area environment preservation study, Ieodo ocean observation station on a submerged rock, deep seawater development, ocean defense, other studies such as WOCE and CLIVAR, studies on global waters including deep seabed exploration program, Antarctic and Arctic studies through both polar stations, and regional studies through joint research centers in China and South Pacific. <p> Through its expertise in ocean sciences, KORDI aspires to become a world-class institute within 10 years, with a reputation for specializing in ocean sciences and optimizing the utilization of research results. This vision can only be realized through the creation of a research-friendly, participatory, open and temperate research environment. The ocean frontier will offer the foundation for a sustainable and bountiful era for citizens of the 21st Century. KORDI will be responsible for conducting the ocean researches that will plant hope and pride in the people of Korea as they become part of a prosperous and sustainable ocean community.
